Shri. Anitha Edward • Founder, Tisram Academy
Guru Shri Anitha Edward is a visionary artist and educator dedicated to preserving and sharing India’s rich cultural heritage through Bharatanatyam and Carnatic Music. Beginning her artistic journey at the age of 7, she trained for 14 years under revered Gurus and is an esteemed alumna of the prestigious Kalakshetra Foundation. Her expertise was further refined under Oscar-winning Maestro A.R. Rahman at KM Music Conservatory. With a Bachelor’s degree in Carnatic Music (India) and a Master’s in Dance Movement Therapy (Germany), she seamlessly blends artistic mastery with academic excellence.
With over 15 years of distinguished teaching experience, including the founding of two academies (Siddhi Kala) in India in 2015, she launched Tisram Academy of Indian Arts in Germany in 2021 during the pandemic, a global platform that has brought Indian classical arts to over 150 students across 24 countries. She reopened the onsite classes in Lagos, Portugal, from January, 2025. Through her commitment to the Guru-Sishya Parampara, she ensures every student receives authentic, personalized training, cultivating discipline, confidence, and a profound connection to India’s cultural legacy.

Please arrive at least 5 minutes early to get dressed and settle in.
All classes are taught under the guidance of our Guru Shri. Anitha Edward, a renowned artist from Kalakshetra, India, with 15+ years of teaching experience.
Children aged 5+ and adults are welcome to attend. The sessions are tailored to suit different age groups.
No prior experience is necessary. The classes are beginner-friendly and open to anyone interested in exploring Indian Classical Art forms - Bharatanatyam Dance or Carnatic Music.
Clothing:
All students are expected to wear our custom-made traditional uniforms for classes, and need to be purchased or ordered after their enrolment via order form. If the uniforms are not available immediately in their size, students can wear any breathable, comfortable, and modest clothing for the classes, until it's ready.
Hair:
Students are advised to keep their hair tied or plaited to facilitate ease of movement and better focus during lessons.
Accessories & Jewelry:
To embrace the traditional experience, students may wear a bindi or simple jewelry such as earrings, a chain, bangles, or dance anklets. Traditional uniform accessories can also be purchased or ordered at a discounted student rate via the order form.
Note: Uniforms and accessories are currently available only for students of Tisram Academy.
Yes, both Bharatanatyam and Carnatic Music are traditionally practiced barefoot. Please ensure your feet are clean and free of footwear during the classes.
Yes, all our students, both kids (aged 5+) and adults, are eligible to apply for Grade Exam Certifications (Grades 1 to 8) in Bharatanatyam Dance and Carnatic Music from prestigious Indian universities. These exams are conducted twice a year. There is no need to travel to India, as our academy serves as an official examination centre for both practical and theory exams!
Note: Participation for Grade Exam Certification is purely optional and not mandatory.
No, we offer flexible options to accommodate students who may not be able to attend weekly on-site classes in Lagos:
- Weekly In-Person Classes in Lagos: Attend 4–5 in-person classes per month.
- Monthly In-Person with Online Classes: Attend one in-person class per month in Lagos, with the remaining 3–4 classes conducted online.
- Hybrid Option: Split your schedule evenly between online and in-person classes, with 2 sessions online and 2 sessions in Lagos each month.
Students who miss any classes can make them up within 60 days (2 months) through our online sessions. This ensures they stay on track with their learning progress. These options ensure that every student can participate while balancing their commitments.
